Things Too Profound for Me

Some things about God are too profound for us to understand. How can fallible, limited humans expect to understand everything about the infallible, infinite God? We can know how He expects us to live as revealed in His word, but some things about His power, wisdom, and character are beyond us. Some people mistakenly reject Bible truths because they cannot understand.

Introduction:

Psalm 131:1 – Lord, my heart is not haughty … Neither do I concern myself with things too profound for me.

Humility teaches us that some things are too profound for us to understand. A little child lets his parents decide where the family will live, how the father will provide for the family, etc. He trusts the parents to take care of these things. His job is to obey his parents.

Likewise, humility should teach us we are too fallible and too limited to understand some things about the greatness of God. Our job is to obey God’s instructions.

Examples of Things Too Profound for Us

God’s wisdom, power, and eternal existence

The Bible says God has always existed and His wisdom and power are infinite.

Psalm 139:6 – Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; It is high, I cannot attain it.

Job 26:14 – T he thunder of His power who can understand?"

These are things that are simply too profound for us. Our job is simply to believe what the Bible says and respond by doing what God tells us to do.

(Psalm 147:5; Job 5:9; 9:10; 11:7-9; 37:15,16; 1 Kings 8:39)

Answers to prayer

How can God answer the prayers of thousands of people praying to Him at the same time?

Ecclesiastes 8:17 – I saw all the work of God, … though a wise man attempts to know it, he will not be able to find it. (Psalm 145:3)

As with the little child, how God does these things is simply beyond us. Our responsibility is simply to trust God and believe that He will answer our prayers to give us what is best.

Love of God

The Bible says, despite our sins, God sent His Son to die on the cross so we could be saved. How can God and Jesus have so much love?

Ephesians 3:19 – The love of Christ passes knowledge…

We may not know how God can have so much love, but we must believe the Bible teaching that this is true so that we trust Him to save us from our sins through the blood of His Son.

(Philippians 4:7)

Danger of Contradicting God’s Word Because We Do Not Understand

Unfortunately, when they cannot understand some things in God’s word, many people invent explanations that disagree with Bible teaching. Examples:

Creation in 6 days

The Bible says God created the heavens and the earth and all kinds of living things in 6 days. Some people cannot understand how God could do this, so they invent human explanations such as evolution or days that last millions of years.

Isaiah 40:28 – The Creator of the ends of the earth, neither faints nor is weary. His understanding is unsearchable.

We must not reject Bible teaching simply because it is too profound for human understanding.

(Ecclesiastes 11:5; Psalm 139:6)

Other miraculous events

Other people deny other miracles such as the Virgin Birth or Jesus’ resurrection because they cannot understand how such things could happen,

Job 37:5 – God does great things which we cannot comprehend.

Our job is to believe and trust in the greatness of God who does things too profound for us.

(Job 9:10; Ecclesiastes 3:11)

Pain, suffering, and death

Some deny God exists because they cannot understand why He allows suffering and pain.

Job doubted God’s justice because He allowed Job to suffer. In the end Job concluded:

Job 42:3 – I have uttered what I did not understand, things too wonderful for me, which I did not know.

The number of individuals in the Godhead or the Deity and humanity of Jesus

Some reject Bible teaching because they cannot understand how three separate living individuals can be one God. Or they cannot believe that Jesus could be both God and man.

Romans 11:33 – Oh, the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are His judgments and His ways past finding out!

Deuteronomy 29:29 – The secret things belong to the Lord our God, but those things which are revealed belong to us and to our children forever, that we may do all the words of this law.

We have solid evidence that God exists and the Bible is His revelation. If there are some things about God we cannot understand, this is exactly what we should expect since the Bible says God is far greater in wisdom and power than we are. Our job is to accept the evidence for God and the Bible and then obey God’s instructions.

(1 Corinthians 1:19-25; Ephesians 3:8)
